Every day, most companies collect large amounts of customer or patient data and seek to use that data to enhance the products and services they offer and thus their relationship with their customers. The data comes directly from customers or through their visits to company websites, from sensors and other devices in products sold to customers and, in some cases, from third parties or software licensed from third parties. The speakers on this panel will address the opportunities, challenges, and practical and legal limitations and risks posed by the use of customer and other data about customers in three very different industries.

is the Senior Director of Fan Engagement at Funimation / Group 1200 Media. At Funimation his team manages all areas of connection with fans: Social Media, Paid Media, Email, Public Relations, and Conventions/Events. In his agency life he worked with clients across verticals including Dr Pepper Snapple Group, Sam's Club, Walmart, Best Buy, HP, Cisco, IBM, Bank of America, H-E-B, SuperValu, Bicycle Playing Cards, Famous Footwear, Texas Instruments, American Airlines, and the U.S. Treasury.
currently serves as Vice President, IoT Solution Sales at Acuity Brands Lighting, Inc. where he is leading the adoption, distribution, and commercialization of indoor positioning solutions and services featuring Visible Light Communication (VLC) and other wireless technologies.
With 25 years of experience, John's background includes group P&L responsibilities, domestic and international sales, strategic partnerships, wireless product management, and large-scale system deployment. He previously served as Director of Business Development at Qualcomm, Inc. where he managed the technology direction and vision of wireless position location services and partnerships for the Internet of Things (IoT), e-commerce, indoor location, retail analytics, and personal safety market verticals. His leadership helped SnapTrack, acquired buy Qualcomm, Inc., grow from a startup to the market leading company in wireless location technology in response to the FCC E911 mandate. Earlier in this career, John helped establish Samsung Telecom America's sales and marketing office in the United Sates, where as Director of Wireless Products, he lead a team to Samsung's first US-awarded wireless business.
John holds a Master of Business Administration in Finance from DePaul University and a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Michigan State University.
is an experienced trial lawyer who has focused his practice on intellectual property and commercial cases. He has gone to trial 35 times, serving as lead trial counsel in 27 of those trials; his clients have prevailed outright in 70% of those cases. Seven of Bob's first chair trials have been patent cases and seven others have been trade secret cases. He has also tried two copyright cases involving software, electronic payment, genetic test, oil and gas exploration, and petrochemical distillation technologies. Bob has represented clients from China, France, Germany, South Korea, and Taiwan, and has handled cases in federal and state courts throughout Texas.
Bob received his BA from the University of Virginia, and JD from Harvard University. He is a Member of the Board of Directors of Japan-America Society of Dallas/Ft. Worth, was Chairman of the Board of Directors of the World Affairs Council of Dallas/Ft. Worth from 2013- 2014, and was a Member of the Mayor of Dallas' International Relations Committee from 2010 - 2014. He is named in The Best Lawyers in America
